People constantly ask if my novel is autobiographical. My response is that anything we create is inevitably autobiographical in some sense. In this case, in developing Pablo (the protagonist), I did in fact draw upon my experiences as a singer when I was younger.
So, when my sister decided to throw me a book-launch party, I decided to surprise my guests by singing two songs in Spanish. This was the second, "Un Año de Amor" ("A Year of Love") by Luz Casal, from the Almodóvar movie Tacones Lejanos (High Heels).
As I took to the stage, the light bulb in the spotlight went out. We didn't have a replacement bulb, which is why the lighting is so bad. All the same, the show must go on (and it did)!
