LGBTQ seniors face a unique set of challenges as they age, particularly when trying to find affordable housing. They are much more likely to be single, live alone, and have no children compared to the general population, as a result of which they tend to be more isolated and have less support. In care homes, LGBTQ seniors often confront homophobia and unfair treatment that drives them back into the closet.
San Francisco’s Openhouse helps to provide housing, direct services, and community programs to Bay Area LGBT seniors. I talked with Director of Programs about Openhouse’s missions, programs, and successes.
